Sochi recap: Figure skating, team event, Day 1

For the first time ever trying out the team figure skating in the Winter Olympics, Russian Federation, Canada, China and Japan hold the top four places needed to advance, respectively, while the USA trails in a tie for fifth.

Date: 6-Feb

Sport: Figure Skating

Event: Team event, men’s and pairs short programs

How U.S. fared: Team USA did not show up today like we thought we would. Jeremy Abbott, the current USA champion, had a mediocre performance at best. At the beginning of his routine, he had a terrible fall out of a quad toe that brought in deductions along with not attempting the triple axel. The viewers could tell that Abbott, along with the rest of Team USA, felt terribly about the score as well by their overly exaggerated pouting looks at the camera. The pair, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, had a shaky routine with out of sync jumps but sublime lifts. The two got fifth out of the ten pair teams.

What happened: In the men’s event, Yuzuru Hanyu for Japan had a superb performance  showing off his energy and unique skate skid move that no one has a name for like those of the triple lutz, triple toe, and triple axel he landed perfectly. In second came the three-time Olympic veteran, Evgeni Plushenko for Russia, for whom the crowd went wild. He was definitely a graceful and skillful site to see. Patrick Chan for Canada, for whom everyone had high expectations for given his three world championship titles, performed subpar for his achievements with a few stumbles here and there, but still showed off his great movement and position over the ice. Yan Han for China stood out in particular because of his young age of 17 and cute, flirtatious vibes given off during his performance.

In the pairs event, Russia’s, Volosozhar and Trankov shook the crowd with the unbelievable triple twist and mastery of the most difficult and intricate moves. The two showed ultimate fluidity while greeting the crowd with their enthusiasm. Canada was not too far behind with Duhamel and Radford and their difficult under the leg tricks and mistake less routine. China came in third with a superb performance as well. France was disappointing with the two falls they had and a less-than-exciting routine.
